OPEN JOB: Lead Protection and Controls Technician LOCATION: JOB IS FULLY REMOTE SALARY: $105,000 to $168,000 FULL-TIME FULL BENEFITS OVERTIME ELIGIBLE - Yes INDUSTRY: Energy - Utilities JOB CATEGORY: Engineering - Electrical IDEAL CANDIDATE - Candidate has 7+ years experience (10+) years preferred) in installation, maintenance and repair of protective relaying schemes, metering, remote control and data systems and capacitor control and protection in company substations and company equipment in customer substations.
- Responsible for oversight and/or field technical training of Relay & Control Technicians/Trainees.
- Lead level candidates capable of mentoring less experienced technicians are strongly preferred. Ideally experience with utility companies.
Qualified candidates will easily be able to answer the following: - What are the three primary characteristics that are included in a CT (current transformer) test?
- How do you define the knee voltage of a CT (current transformer)?
- What is the basic electrical principle on which bus differential protection operates?
JOB DESCRIPTION: - The Utility Protection & Control (P&C) Lead Technician will be responsible for overall technical oversight and documentation requirements including but not limited to work plans, isolation plans, and functional test plans. This role will be actively involved (hands-on) during complete testing & final checkout. The Utility P&C Technician Lead will serve as a safety net to ensure that any errors introduced by incorrectly engineered design packages or installation are identified and corrected prior to compromising the safety of employees and equipment or the reliability of the transmission and distribution system.
- Responsibilities:
- Work around energized “In-Service” electrical equipment to perform testing and commissioning activities on reliability upgrades in energized “brownfield” transmission stations.
- Develop isolation plans & procedures for the removal of existing equipment such as protective relays, relay panels, AC/DC panels, battery systems, breakers, transformers, SSVTs, CCVTs, PTs, CTs, linear couplers, etc.
- Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel, educate customers, and present information to internal and external customers.
- Assist with all aspects of testing of substation devices and equipment, including (without limitation): reading / verifying all voltage and current inputs to relays and metering, trip testing, functional verification of all control systems, verification of all devices and equipment alarms, and other similar testing.
- Identify and resolve design errors.
- Directly witness or perform critical tests such as DC functional trip testing prior to energization and in-service.
- Work variable hours, including nights & weekends, and travel in the Northeast and northeastern Mid-West based on customer requirements.
- Extended hours and consecutive workdays occasionally required during commissioning activities.
REQUIRED Qualifications: - Minimum 7 years of utility substation relay testing experience OR combination of minimum 4 years on-the-job experience and technical education/military experience
- Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.
- No relocation is provided. Candidates must reside within the United States to be considered.
- Possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted driver’s license.
- Submit to initial and periodic customer required background and drug screenings
PREFERRED Qualifications: - Associates or Bachelor degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution and/or applicable military experience.
- Willingness and aptitude for training and mentoring technicians and other members of technical engineering team – past experience in a leadership or mentorship role a plus
- 10+ years of experience in utility substation electrical testing experience.
- Transmission substation relay test experience.
- Level 3 or 4 NETA or NICET certification.
- Power distribution field experience in servicing, maintaining, and testing electrical power distribution equipment.
- Ability to provide technical instructions, mentoring, and guidance regarding substation and electrical power systems to field personnel.
- Knowledge and practice of safety precautions related to working with electrical and electronic equipment.
- Ability to read drawings and understand various protection schemes and proper checkout techniques for the troubleshooting and correcting of non-working schemes.
- Experience with relay testing software such as Enoserve (RTS) and Doble Protection Suite.
- Experience with relay communication software such as SEL Compass, AcSELerator Quickset (SEL-5030), GE (Enervista Launchpad), RFL (Gard PRO), and other common industry software.
- Knowledgeable with all aspects of the testing & operation of various protective relays and power meters, including all device types: microprocessor-based, solid state, and electro-mechanical.
